Colton Recall: Anti-Corruption Theme Hurts Mayor

Driving through Colton these days is an interesting experience.
Signs everywhere, "No on Recalll - Stop Corruption", Yes on recall - Stop Corruption". The whole mess is dizzying to say the least. With Mayor Kelly Chastain's job on the line in what should have been a low turnout election for the city, now looks to draw heavy turnout in terms of Colton. The use of the anti-corruption theme in a city that can't seem to get out of its own way on the scandal front doesn't help the incumbent Mayor.
Unfortunately for Chastain, if history is any indicator, things may not go well for her depending upon the level of voter awareness.
If voters are uninformed, which they usually are, they vote with the opinion that if the recall election qualified for the ballot, then the person must have done something wrong and out comes the boot. In the case of Chastain it may not be as much about doing wrong, but failing to act.
Colton official's (including the Mayor of Fontana employed as the Assistant City Manager) slinging insults (referring to Chamber of Commerce members as "Chamber Monkeys") directed at residents wasn't too bright. As a matter of fact it threw gas on a fire that may cost Chastain her job. Chastain was already under fire for poor communication with residents, and failing to address the insult issue made it worse.
Best to all involved in this matter, but in the end the City's name suffers once again.
