4th Supe Watch: Lorri Galloway Is Running For Supe
By Matthew Cunningham | 07/02/09 | 03:15 PM EDT | 9 Comments
I just heard from Anaheim Councilwoman Lorri Galloway, who has decided to run for the 4th Supervisor District.
"My intention is to be the only Democrat in the race," Galloway told me.
When I asked if she had any notion whether former Anaheim Mayor and Democrat Tom Daly is still running, she replied "If I were him, I wouldn't, and I'm going to do everything I can to get his endorsements."
Lorri declined to reveal her endorsements at this time, but said "I wouldn't do this if I weren't sure of a large base of support."
"The five conservative Republicans on the Board of Supervisors do not represent all of Orange County, especially not north county, and I want to provide that representation," she told me. "I want to provide something new, something exciting, something that needs to be there."
"I also intend to bring something different, like way cute shoes!"
Lorri is a tough, energetic campaigner, but I think this is a tall mountain to climb, even if she succeeds in clearing the other Democrats, Tom Daly and La Habra Councilwoman Rosie Espinoza, out of the race. [The chatter going around is that Espinoza is shifting her sights to a run for OC Clerk-Recorder].
The 4th Supervisor District is 39% Republican and 37% Democratic, with nearly 20% of voters registered as decline-to-state. Lorri points to the district's changing demographics and large number of independents as factors that will help her candidacy, and the fact that Anaheim - where she has run strongly -- comprises approximately 40% of the 4th Supe District.
"I'm not stepping out, let me be clear about that," Galloway said near the end of our conversation.
My take is Lorri has a steep hill to climb, especially if this race comes down to her and Fullerton Councilman Shawn Nelson. In that case, the race will get partisanized and Nelson can expect the full weight of the Republican establishment to come down on his side. Furthermore, I think 2010 is shaping up to the Obama Backlash year, just as 2008 was the year of the Great Obama Tide. Polling shows independent voters are really souring on Obama's super-size government policies, which doesn't help a Democrat running in a split district.
But who knows?
Also, the determination of Lorri's announcement, taken together with some other things I'm hearing, lead me to believe Daly may not run after all. As readers know, incumbent 4th District Supervisor Chris Norby is running for the OC Clerk-Recorder seat Daly is presumably leaving to run for Norby's seat. A source on the 5th Floor said Norby was recently testing the waters with other supervisors regarding their attitude about extending supervisor term limits from tow to three terms. Norby floated the same idea a couple of years ago. The merits of the idea idea, I'm not sure why Chris would be sending that particular trial balloon up again unless he suspected Daly might stay put, thus closing off the Clerk-Recorder's office as a post-term limit landing spot.
I have a call into Tom Daly for comment.
UPDATE: In my message to Tom Daly, I inquired what he had to say about Lorri Galloway's announcement. Daly called me back a little later and left a voicemail, stating in response, "I will have plenty to say later this summer, but for the time being I don't intend to comment on every person who may or may not be running."
Daly's campaign consultant, Chris Jones, was less diplomatic:
"Our campaign really got nothing to say about her alleged candidacy, except to note that she is not a resident of the 4th Supervisorial District and that North County residents aren't generally supportive of carpetbaggers."

I am very suprised and overjoyed by this news. As a strong republican, I can not say I agree with Lorri Galloway on everything. However, Lorri is a rare breed in politics, one that is worthy of PUBLIC TRUST.
Living in Anaheim I witnessed the tough battle Lorri faught last year defending her council seat. In central and west Anaheim she mopped up the competition despite an unprecented smear campaign against her. This clearly signals her strength in this race.
Tom Daly is weak and everyone in Anaheim knows this. His corporate hand-outs to Disney nearly doomed this city. He has no popular base of support and is destined to fade aways to Lorri rising star.
Matt your faith in Sean Nelson is misplaced, he is an untalened poltician and poorly postioned with the district. Lorri is the front runner.

|I have been an Anaheim resident for more than 19 years, and I believe that there is no stronger canidate than Lorri Galloway. For example, Curt Pringle, Disneyland and the Chamber of Commerce did whatever they could to destroy her. However, her dedication and courage destroyed them.

|Chris Norby has no shame. I can't believe the guy is re-floating the idea of allowing a 3rd term for Supervisors. Can he be any more self serving? The shenanigans he pulled to get his brother a job before the end of his current term was embarrassing enough. If the idea of a 3rd term fails I'm sure he'll be aasking his brother to hire him as an assistant.

|Wouldn't a third term require an amendment to the County Charter approved by the voters?

|Galloway says about Daly running " If I were him, I wouldn't." Wiskol describes it as a warning.
Daly's in, but if she had any hope of changing that decision, her stupid remark eliminated that slim reed. Daly may be cautious but he won't back down from this fight, especially after a comment like hers.

|Galloway is excellent choice to represent the 4th District. As the only Dem on the Anaheim City Council, she has intelligently positioned herself as the key vote on what is an otherwise split council. Pringle has had great difficultly in getting the other Republicans on the council to support him; Galloway's ability to take a leadership role and provide balance there has been quite remarkable.
Endearing her to many Republican’s is her staunch opposition to Pringle's constant efforts to give Disney what ever they desire (recently a $77 million dollar give away). Interestingly, Pringle’s corporate welfare Disney give-a-ways have also been a strong trait of Tom Daly. As the Anaheim Mayor he led the effort that gave a renovated Anaheim Stadium to Disney rent free. The only gain for Anaheim in the deal was the name change; The California Angeles became "Anaheim Angels'. The agreement negotiated by Daly proved to be a disaster. Arte Moreno drove a truck through the agreement. In court Daly could neither, remember or verbally articulate, anything that could support Anaheim’s opposition to the name becoming the “Los Angeles Angels”. Worse yet, now Moreno has the stadium virtually rent free.
Galloway is certainly her own person, showing great strength in the largest city in the 4th District and in her efforts as the Executive Director of the Eli Home for Abused Children. The O.C. Board of Supervisors, and more importantly the constituents of the 4th District, can certainly use the passion, experience and strength she can bring.

|Good to see the Gallobots out in full force to defend their lady ...
"I also intend to bring something different, like way cute shoes!"
"Aw shucks, I'm just a girl!" Good to see that Galloway aspires to take the high-powered intellectualism that's served Anaheim so well countywide. (Maybe she's hoping that 4th District voters are lusting after the "We Elected OC's Dimmest Supervisor" plaque that was awarded to 2nd District voters after they elected Jim Silva?)
Given that she actually lives in Anaheim Hills (despite her woman-of-the-people posturing), why doesn't she run in the 3rd District?

|Biff,
I am pleased to see that you are up to your old tricks. The comment above, that remind me of the kind of visceral and thoughtless slander we saw last fall, will only help Galloway become a county supervisor.
Lorri Galloway’s political opponents are not republicans, but an elite political class intent on subverting the will of the people in favor of the status quo.
Like no other member on the Anaheim city council, Lorri takes her job very seriously by intellectually engaging every issue the presents itself. And yes she does this in nice shoes; Lorri Galloway can be a politician, a entrepreneur, a mother and a wife all at the same time.
The fact that Lorri can joke about her shoes with the press is a testament to her personality. She is a real and honest gal not willing to put up with sexist bigots named Biff.

|Ah yes, it's the same old song of Galloway-exceptionalism, dusted off from the City Council elections and replayed here. Lorri is a woman of unparalled virtue, noble and giving and pure, Lorri is a world-renowned intellect, Lorri is a masterful political operator the likes of which you've never seen before ... and ANYONE WHO DARES QUESTION LORRI IS A EVIL, HATEFUL, SEXIST, DISNEY-LOVER!!!1!!! To hear you folks pile it on, it's amazing that this Mother Teresa/Einstein/JFK hybrid isn't already in the White House. In reality, the woman is a substance-free embarassment who pouts and flounces her way through council meetings. She has no vision for Anaheim or Orange County, which is why she has to speak in vague generalities ("something new, something exciting"), distractions (way cute shoes!), and stick labels on herself (Democrat, anti-Disney) in hopes that enough people will join the bandwagon. It'll be interesting to see how far she can get without the advantages of incumbency and developer cash behind her. (And again, why isn't she running in the district where she actually lives?)
